This is an opportunity for Metro Detroit, and an honor
for me, to share this rare and sophisticated martial study of Yagyu
Jujutsu. Yagyu Jujutsus roots reach back into time to when
this family clan was chosen as the Shoguns personal and exclusive
teachers. It continues on today through just a handful of licensed
and authorized instructors. We owe a debt of gratitude to John Viol
Sensei for bringing it over from Japan and sharing his knowledge
and understanding with us.
At the Martial Science Center, our training in this classical study
of Jujutsu is grounded in sogobujutsu principles and methodologies.
We will focus on the links between the three methods of engagement-
grappling, percussion, and weaponry to pursue a deeper understanding
of what connects these approaches and not what separates them. All
too often, instructors spend their time focusing on the perceived
differences between the arts rather than the relationship that exists.
Yagyu Jujutsu is a parent art, in other words, a style that other
arts came from. Aikido, Judo, some forms of Karate and Kobudo all
can trace their lineage back to Jujutsu. As a result of studying
Jujutsu and adopting the same learning strategies employed by the
samurai , we will learn more, comprehend more, and achieve greater
understanding and proficiency.
